Quiet treadmills for your workout at home
More and more people like to exercise in their own homes. It becomes even more important not to disturb anyone and to be able to concentrate fully on your own workout. Treadmills in particular are known to generate a relatively large amount of noise, but there are also some models that are particularly quiet. This is usually achieved by a good motor, special damping and smooth-running parts. If you think these special treadmills cost several thousand euros, you are wrong. There are already very good models for 300€. Those who want a bit more technical sophistication, like e.g. wants a large color display, but does not have to do without.
In addition, the noise can be additionally dampened by a few tricks, which we would like to present in addition. In general, the ground conditions, the motor and, above all, the weight and the running style of the runner are decisive for the noise development. Good treadmills counteract the latter.
A quick overview
Before we get into the details, we want to give you a quick overview of the quietest treadmills. We have compiled this selection for you from long research and offer something for every budget. Generally, however, for more money you get more stability and quality and thus less noise. However, the surcharge is usually worth it, since these devices usually last much longer.
When determining the placements, we not only paid attention to the loudness of the motor, but also to the stability of the device. This is decisive for the sound attenuation. In general, the heavier the runner and the less rolling over the entire foot, the higher the expected volume. Heavy and stable equipment can counteract this.
You can find a detailed list with the best features below.
What does a treadmill need to be quiet?
During our intensive research into the quietest treadmills, we came across noise levels ranging from 40 decibels to 85 decibels. To help you get an understanding of what lies behind the various volume indications, take a look at this chart:
40 decibel |
Whisper, open window in quiet street |
55 decibels | quiet conversation in the apartment |
65 decibels | normal conversation |
70 decibels | Hair dryer |
75 decibels | Spinning a washing machine |
115 decibels | Aircraft at takeoff |
For a treadmill to be as quiet as possible, three things in particular must be met for it to be so:
- A powerful motor, with min. 2 HP. A small motor would expend more energy to run at high speeds and would run at peak power to do so. This generates a lot of noise
- The parts and especially the rollers on which the actual treadmill is mounted must run smoothly and be well oiled.
- The treadmill should have good damping, which reduces the vibrations transmitted to the floor.
The presented treadmills in detail
You already got a small overview of the quietest treadmills above. But of course, the treadmill should not only be as quiet as possible, but also powerful and modern. We have summarized all the advantages and disadvantages of each treadmill for you compactly.
Place 1: Maxxus RunMaxx 8.1
First place in our list when it comes to just the combined noise of the engine and stability. The motor remains moderately quiet at around 55 dB under full load. This corresponds to just a quiet conversation between two people. In addition, the unit’s own weight of 132kg provides the necessary stability. There is hardly any rattling or wobbling when running at high speeds here. The perfect starting situation for a quiet run without disturbing the neighbors.
Advantages
+ Quiet motor with max. 55 dB Noise level
+ Very high dead weight and good stability
+ speed 1km/h to 20km/h
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ Control via app possible
+ pulse measurement
Disadvantages
–
2nd place: Maxxus RunMaxx 7.3
The second place in our best list is right behind the first place. The motor is just as quiet here with a maximum of 55 dB and the stability and damping almost come close to that of the winner. With a curb weight of about 95kg, 2nd place is not even 10kg behind its big brother. However, the maximum speed is 18 km/h and the device cannot be controlled via the app.
Advantages
+ Quiet motor with max. 55 dB Noise level
+ Very high dead weight and good stability
+ speed 1km/h to 18km/h
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ pulse measurement
Disadvantages
–
3rd place: Fitifito FT850
Third place goes to the Fitifito FT850 treadmill, which impresses with its 3.5 hp motor and its own weight of a stately 91 kg. This treadmill is something for sprinters with its 22km/h peak. However, this takes its toll with a whopping 75 dB under maximum speed. However, since treadmills are rarely used for such high speeds for a long time, this should be negligible. Much more important is the good stability and shock absorption, which comes up with 8 dampers.
Advantages
+ speed 1km/h to 22km/h
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ Bluetooth for multimedia playback
Disadvantages
– Loud engine under full load
Rank 4: Sportstech F37
With each seat, the dead weight of the devices slowly decreases and this is also reflected in the overall volume when running. At 73kg, however, the Sportstech F37 can still keep up well with the front runners. Here, too, 8 dampers are installed and a multi-layer sound insulation. Nevertheless, the motor gets as loud as a washing machine in the spin cycle with 75 dB at the highest speed. Due to the slightly lower tare weight and the loud motor, this treadmill is deservedly in 4th place in our view.
Advantages
+ speed 1km/h to 20km/h
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ Bluetooth for multimedia playback
+ Train with the app
Disadvantages
– loud engine and full load
Place 5: Fitifito ST 500
Fifth place in our list when it comes to noise development only. The motor is extremely quiet with its maximum 40 dB. However, with this treadmill there is to consider that it is relatively light with a tare weight of 41kg. This has the advantage that it can be stowed quickly, especially due to the folding function, but the light weight means that the shock absorption is not optimal. With the tips mentioned below, such as the underlayment mats and a suitable running style, this is definitely a practical candidate for your own home. If you want to be on the safe side, purchase one of the first 4 devices. Ambitious runners who need speeds above 15km/h are also not in the right place here.
Advantages
+ very quiet motor with max. 40 dB noise emission
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ available in three modern colors
Disadvantages
– relatively low own weight of 41kg (therefore less shock absorption)
– maximum speed 15km/h
– few running programs to choose from
Place 6: Sportstech F17
The second place in our list, if we also only look at the noise development of the engine here. However, with this treadmill there is to consider that it is relatively light with a dead weight of 40kg. This has the advantage that it can be stowed quickly, especially due to the folding function, but the light weight means that the shock absorption is not optimal. With the tips mentioned below , such as the underlay mats and a suitable running style, this is definitely a practical candidate for your own home. If you want to be on the safe side, you should buy a heavier machine.
Advantages
+ very quiet motor with max. 44 dB Noise level
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ Train with the app
Disadvantages
– relatively low own weight of 40kg (therefore less shock absorption)
– max. 12km/h running speed
Rank 7: Sportstech F10
Our consolation prize goes to the Sportstech F10, one of the smallest models in the Sportstech line. This is not only noticeable in the weight, but also in the moderate running speed of 10km/h maximum. This is probably due to the weak 1 hp motor, which also gets relatively loud with 68 dB. A good choice for beginners, but not really an option for runners with foresight.
Advantages
+ foldable and space-saving stowable
+ Training with the app
Disadvantages
– relatively low own weight of 21kg (therefore less shock absorption)
– max. 10km/h running speed
– quite weak and loud 1hp motor
Conclusion
With the right choice of treadmill, you can already achieve a lot. Keep in mind that a quiet engine alone is not everything. Also, a high dead weight usually offer great advantages when it comes to minimizing noise. Use the best list to decide which treadmill meets your needs.
If you are a hobby runner, we would recommend the Fitifito ST 500. With a good price / performance ratio, you get a lot here. The noise development is moderate but not too loud.
